چکیده

The thesis is logically divided in two parts; one part discusses host interfacing to high-speed networks and the other focuses on connection establishment and resource reservation in DTM gigabit networks. An important problem posed by high-speed networks available today is the inability to provide the high bandwidth of the transmission media to an application. This thesis discusses how to avoid the interface bottleneck between the network and the host. Many design choices presented are also applicable when designing other network units, such as switches and routers. The thesis presents a design for a high-speed host interface to a SUN workstation that is being built for the DTM network prototype. DTM is a new protocol suite designed for high-speed networks running at several gigabits per second. It is based on fast circuit switching and uses 64-bit slots to transfer data. The DTM protocol suite and a 622 Mb/s prototype of a DTM network that is running at the department of Teleinformatics, KTH is presented in the thesis. In a fast circuit-switched network such as DTM, the connection establishment and resource reservation strategy is crucial to the performance of the network. Also, these mechanisms are tightly coupled to the host interface. The thesis will therefore focus on connection establishment and resource reservation in DTM and give a description of a scheme for fast connection establishment.

Fast Connection Establishment in the DTM Gigabit Network

Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) is a new protocol suite based on synchronous fast circuit switching. The DTM network is based on bandwidth reservation and supports dynamic reallocation of bandwidth. It is designed to support real-time multimedia applications and high-speed computer communication. DTM uses a novel medium-access technique and provides a multicast connection-oriented servi...

The DTM Gigabit Network

DTM is a fiber-optic network, based on bandwidth reservation and with support for dynamic reallocation of bandwidth. It is designed for real-time multimedia applications and for high-speed computer communication. DTM uses a novel medium-access technique and provides a multicast connection-oriented service. Several DTM networks can be connected into one large network. A prototype implementation ...

The DTM Protocol— Design and Implementation

The evolution of fiber optics has made it possible to build high speed communication systems, gigabit (per second) networks. Gigabit networks have enough capacity to integrate traffic from several applications, such as video, audio and computer traffic, into one network. Techniques for gigabit networks, such as packet, cell and circuit switching, have been evaluated at different gigabit testbed...

Supporting the Internet Protocols in a High Performance Real-Time Network

This licentiate thesis presents a method for using a high performance network based on circuit switching as a new link level technology for the Internet. The network is called Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode, DTM, which provides a service based on simplex multirate channels. DTM uses resource reservation and synchronous switching, which gives good real-time support. These features make DTM we...

DTM — A True Broadband Concept Based on Fast Circuit Switching

The paper discusses the use of fast circuit-switching in future highcapacity networks. We believe that the capacity and the size of the public network will increase to an extent where it is infeasible to rely on bandwidth optimization and dynamic congestion control mechanisms [8]. Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) is a new protocol suite based on synchronous fast circuit switching. It is ...
